Cool dude, great discussion of practical impressions of Epictetus’ teaching. “..even in extreme circumstances you can be something.” Thank you!

What a wonderful exchange! Massimo is right: A. A. Long is a titan of Stoicism. On the occasions that I've gotten to see Dr. Long speak, he was always a real gentleman — or, as the Stoics would say — a kalos kagathos!

My Heaven! Two giants on Stoic philosophy in a fascinating, lucid discussion of the intricacies of the time of the Stoics; and who in particular directly most influenced them--names I never heard. The concept of inner freedom as an inner citadel that can be attacked, but not taken, seems obvious, but is totally enlightening but an approach from the inside out to see it. Tony said we practice Stoicism within and through the unfolding of our individual lives. Universal Stoic principles essentially have our signature. I learned about Nelson Mandela from Massimo before, but now Viktor Frankl andJames Stockdale are introduced. To learn of Stockdale’s “paradox” as a technique to survival—deriving from The Enchiridion that helped him stay alive—and that it ties to self-respect was profound, to say the least. What can be more valuable than that? The very reward to acting stoically is dignity, but it’s self-respect that is the most valuable tool to survive—literally in time of torture! It’s was almost comical when he compared Epictetus’ brutal, tough love and compared to Tennyson’s incessant grieving. 😄 Then there’s Albert Ellis, Shakespeare, not to forget all about Arrian’s great organizational skills and writing--even his books on India and comets. Then all of sudden Xeno is mentioned on his works on Homer and that the Stoics were “soaked” in Homer. This video could have gone on all day. By Jove, it covered everything in Zeus’ universe. 😉 Absolutely fabulous. I was back in school today...or actually the groves of Academe. Nice work! 😊📚👍
