My version of the view from above: the milky way galaxy has 100 thousand million stars and at least as many planets, there are millions of other galaxies, it takes 250 million years for our sun to make a full orbit around the the center of our galaxy. Complexity on a scale that our simplifying human brain (which has about 86 billion neurons itself) has trouble comprehending.
The view from above can lead me to "spiritual bypassing" and nihilism if I emphasize it too much. Rather, I see the view from above as mainly an emotional palate cleanser to think about during difficult times.
As a side note, I watched and much enjoyed the video link on Massimo's conversation with Robert Wright about the Logos topic. Massimo, is there any way you could pull together any previous writing you have done on the topic of the Logos and post it for us here on Substack? I really enjoyed the historical sketch of the Logos and how it intersected with various philosophical and theological points of view.
How to think about God with Cicero
You would have enjoyed our recent event On the Nature of the Gods (https://classicalwisdom.substack.com/p/on-the-nature-of-the-gods-cicero) - we featured the new translation by Quintus Curtius, so it was with him and Michael Fontaine. I'd be curious to hear what you think of it!
Interesting; always liked Cicero’s writings-however, personally, I don’t think about God any more than the Easter bunny, Tooth Fairy, or Santa.🤷♂️
